The short version
- ALP pouches are slim; ZYN's main line is a regular pouch. Same milligrams, different feel in the mouth.
- Every ALP can holds 20 pouches. ZYN cans hold 15 or 20 depending on the flavor and strength, so check the count before comparing 5-packs.
- ALP's standard flavors all come in 3mg, 6mg or 9mg. ZYN runs from 1.5mg to 13.5mg, spread across different cans and lines.
- Switching brands: match the number you use now, or drop one step, and expect the pouch itself to feel different for the first can.
ALP and ZYN are the two nicotine pouch brands people most often ask us to compare, usually because they use one and are curious about the other. They have more in common than most pairs: both are tobacco-free, both are sold here in 5-packs, and both cover light to strong. The differences are in the pouch itself (ALP is slim, ZYN is regular), in how many pouches a can holds (ALP is 20 every time, ZYN is 15 or 20 depending on the can), and in how each brand lays out its strengths. Here is the comparison, taken from the product data for what we stock, and how to move between them without buying the wrong can.
The pouch: ALP slim, ZYN regular
The ALP standard line and the ALP Drifters line are both the slim format: a longer, flatter pouch that sits lower on the gum and shows less from the outside. ZYN's main line is the regular format, a fuller pouch that most people treat as the benchmark feel, and ZYN also sells a few flavors as a mini (Citrus Mini, for one), the smallest of the three formats.
A slim pouch and a regular pouch at the same strength carry the same milligrams of nicotine. What changes is how much you notice the pouch. People who find ZYN's regular pouch bulky usually get on well with ALP's slim; people who like a pouch they can feel tend to find slim too light in the mouth.
ALP Chilled Mint is the brand's plain mint: a clean, crisp mint with a cooling finish and no added complexity, in 3mg, 6mg or 9mg, 20 slim pouches to the can.
ZYN Cool Mint is the closest match on the ZYN side: crisp peppermint with a smooth cooling finish, in the regular format, 15 pouches to the can at 1.5mg, 3mg, 6mg or 8mg.
Pouches per can: 20 every time vs 15 or 20
Every ALP can we stock holds 20 pouches, across the standard line, the Drifters line and the EU line, so a 5-pack is always 100 pouches. ZYN is less uniform. Cool Mint and Peach at 3mg or 6mg come 15 to a can, which makes a 5-pack 75 pouches. Cool Mint Regular at 9mg or 11mg, the whole Ultra line and Blueberry Mint 11mg come 20 to a can. Citrus Mini holds 20 at 3mg but 15 at 6mg.
So a ZYN 5-pack and an ALP 5-pack are not always the same number of pouches; look at the pouches-per-can line in the specs before you compare the two. Every ZYN can we carry is in the ZYN collection.
Strength ladders side by side
Milligrams are per pouch, and how the numbers feel is covered in our nicotine pouch strengths guide. Here is how the two brands lay their strengths out in the cans we stock.
Line | Strengths per pouch | Pouches per can |
|---|---|---|
ALP standard (Chilled Mint, Spearmint, Mountain Wintergreen, Refreshing Chill, Tropical Fruit, Sweet Nectar, Classic) | 3mg, 6mg or 9mg | 20 |
ALP Drifters | 6mg or 12mg | 20 |
ALP EU | 12mg or 18mg | 20 |
ZYN standard cans (Cool Mint, Spearmint, Wintergreen, Smooth) | 1.5mg, 3mg, 6mg or 8mg | 15 |
ZYN Peach, Dragonberry | 3mg or 6mg | 15 |
ZYN Cool Mint Regular | 9mg or 11mg | 20 |
ZYN Ultra | 9mg or 11mg | 20 |
ZYN frosted fruit (Blueberry Frost, Black Currant Frost) | 13.5mg | 20 |
ALP's ladder is the simpler one. Every standard flavor comes in the same three steps, so you can move from 3mg to 6mg to 9mg without changing flavor, and the Drifters and EU lines pick up above that at 12mg and 18mg. ZYN's spread is wider but it is split across different cans: the light end lives on the 15-count standard cans, 9mg and 11mg live on the Regular and Ultra cans, and the strongest flavors are the frosted fruits. Moving one step up in ZYN often means a different can, and sometimes a different flavor.
At the extremes, ZYN goes lower (1.5mg Cool Mint, against ALP's 3mg floor) and ALP goes higher (18mg in the EU line, against ZYN's 13.5mg top).
Nicotine is addictive. The number on the can is milligrams per pouch, not per can, and a 12mg pouch is not a stronger flavor, it is twice the nicotine of a 6mg pouch of the same flavor.
Flavors: where each brand leans
ALP: mint, soft fruit, and one with no flavor at all
ALP's standard line is small and easy to read. On the mint side there are Chilled Mint (pure mint, cooling finish), Spearmint, Mountain Wintergreen (a slightly sweeter wintergreen) and Refreshing Chill. On the fruit side there are Tropical Fruit, a soft blend that is not sharp, and Sweet Nectar. Then there is Classic, which has no added flavor, sweetness or cooling agents at all; it is the pick for people who want to taste as little as possible, and the ALP flavor with no direct ZYN equivalent except ZYN Smooth.
The Drifters line is where ALP gets bolder: fruit-and-ice flavors with a stronger cooling finish, in Watermelon Kiwi Ice, Blueberry Lemonade Ice, Lemon Raspberry, Island Peach and Mango Freeze, each in 6mg or 12mg. The EU line (Frostbite, Chilled Mint, Spearmint, Mountain Wintergreen, Tropical Fruit, Cherries and Berries) is the 12mg and 18mg tier. Everything ALP we carry is in the ALP collection.
ZYN: mint first, then the Ultra line and bold fruit
ZYN's lineup is built around mint, with Cool Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Menthol and the near-neutral Smooth in the standard cans. Above those sits ZYN Ultra, a 9mg or 11mg line of 20-count cans with its own mint-leaning flavors: Arctic Mint, Peppermint Frost, Fresh Spearmint, Wintergreen Blast, Menthol Ice, Chill Mist, Citrus Zest and Signature Smooth.
ZYN Ultra Arctic Mint is a good example of the line: a bold, crisp mint with a sharp, icy cooling finish, 20 pouches to the can at 9mg or 11mg. If ALP's 9mg Chilled Mint is where you sit, this is the ZYN can to compare it with.
ZYN's fruit side is bolder and bigger than ALP's: Black Cherry, Peach, Dragonberry, Blueberry Mint, Guava Spice and Cactus Spice, plus the frosted fruits (Blueberry Frost, Black Currant Frost) that pair fruit with a cooling finish at 13.5mg. If you want fruit at a light strength, ZYN Peach at 3mg or 6mg is the soft option; if you want fruit with ice, ALP Drifters and the ZYN frosted fruits are the two places to look, with Drifters starting lower at 6mg.
Switching from one to the other
Most people who switch are not changing strength, they are changing pouch. Three rules keep the first order from going wrong.
- Match the number. ZYN 6mg to ALP 6mg, ZYN 9mg to ALP 9mg. If you are between two ALP steps (a ZYN 8mg user, say), take the lower one first; you can go up on the next can.
- Pick the nearest flavor, not a new one. Cool Mint to Chilled Mint, Wintergreen to Mountain Wintergreen, Smooth to Classic, Peach to Tropical Fruit.
- Give it the whole can. A slim pouch after years of regular, or the other way round, feels wrong for a day or two and then stops being noticeable.
Nicotine pouches are final sale, so one 5-pack of the nearest flavor at your current strength is the lowest-risk first order. Can counts differ, so compare pouches, not cans, when you weigh the two.
Which one to try first
If you have never used a pouch, ZYN Cool Mint at 3mg in the regular format is the most common first can and the one most other pouches get compared to. ALP's answer is its 3mg bundle: one can each of Mountain Wintergreen, Chilled Mint, Spearmint, Refreshing Chill and Tropical Fruit, all at 3mg, 20 pouches to the can, which is the simplest way to find out which ALP flavor you will reorder.
If you already use a pouch and want the shorthand: ALP for a slim pouch, 20 to a can, and a flavor list you can hold in your head; ZYN for a regular pouch, the widest strength spread and the bigger fruit lineup. For how ZYN sits against VELO and the mini-format brands, our ZYN, VELO and on! comparison covers the rest of the shelf.
Questions people ask
Are ALP and ZYN pouches the same size?
No. ALP's standard and Drifters lines are slim pouches, longer and flatter. ZYN's main line is the regular format, a fuller pouch, and a few ZYN flavors come as a mini. The milligrams are per pouch either way; the format changes how the pouch feels, not how much nicotine is in it.
How many pouches are in a can of ALP vs ZYN?
Every ALP can we stock holds 20 pouches, so a 5-pack is 100. ZYN varies: Cool Mint and Peach at 3mg or 6mg hold 15, while the 9mg and 11mg Regular cans, the Ultra line and Blueberry Mint hold 20. Citrus Mini holds 20 at 3mg and 15 at 6mg.
Which ALP strength matches ZYN 6mg?
ALP 6mg is the same milligrams per pouch. Because ALP's pouch is slim and ZYN's is regular, some people find the ALP feels a touch lighter and some find it about the same. Start at 6mg, and if it is not enough after a full can, 9mg is the next step in the same flavor.
Does ALP go stronger than ZYN?
In what we stock, yes. ALP's EU line is sold at 12mg or 18mg per pouch, above ZYN's top of 13.5mg. At the light end ZYN goes lower: Cool Mint starts at 1.5mg, while the lightest ALP is 3mg.
Can I return a can if I pick the wrong strength?
Nicotine pouches are final sale, so pick carefully. If you are unsure, a single 5-pack of the flavor closest to what you already use is the lowest-risk first order, or a variety bundle that lets you try several flavors at one strength.
