Nicotine pouch strengths explained: 3mg to 16mg, brand by brand

The number on the can is milligrams per pouch. Here is what each level feels like, how ZYN, VELO and on! label them differently, and how to pick a first can.

The short version

  • Milligrams are per pouch, not per can.
  • 2 to 3mg is light, 4 to 6mg is where most people land, 9mg and up is for heavy use.
  • Brands name the same strength differently; match the number, not the word.
  • Compare prices per pouch; cans hold 15 or 20.

The number on the can is milligrams of nicotine per pouch, not per can and not per hour. That is the whole secret, and most of the confusion about strengths comes from forgetting it. Here is how the numbers map to what you feel, brand by brand, and how to pick a first can without regretting it.

What the milligrams mean

A 3mg pouch holds three milligrams of nicotine. How much of that reaches you depends on how long you keep it in and how your body absorbs it, which is why two people can describe the same pouch very differently. As a rough guide:

  • 2mg to 3mg: light. The right start for anyone new to nicotine, or coming off a few cigarettes a day.
  • 4mg to 6mg: regular. The most popular strength by a wide margin, and where most pack-a-day smokers land.
  • 7mg to 9mg: strong. Noticeable for twenty to thirty minutes, with a clear "hit" in the first five.
  • 11mg and up: extra strong. Built for heavy, long-time users. Start lower than you think if you have never had one.
Heads up

Nicotine is addictive, and a strength that feels like nothing at first can feel like plenty ten minutes later. Give a new pouch its full time before deciding it is too weak.

Brand by brand

Brands do not label the same feeling the same way. ZYN's "regular" is 6mg; VELO calls its 6mg regular as well but sells a 9mg "strong" beside it; on! runs 2, 4 and 8. The table is what we stock today; flavors come and go, so check the can.

Pouches per can

A standard can holds 15 or 20 pouches depending on the brand and the format. ZYN cans are 15; the Mini and Dry formats pack smaller pouches. If you are comparing prices, compare per pouch, not per can; the per-can number on our product pages does exactly that.

How to pick your first can

If you have never used nicotine, start at 2mg or 3mg, keep it in for twenty minutes, and see how you feel the next day. If you smoke, match it: a few a day is 3mg, a pack is 6mg, more than that is 9mg. If you are switching from another pouch brand, match the milligrams, not the words on the can.

Flavor matters more than people admit. Mint and wintergreen are the safe first picks; coffee, citrus and cinnamon are the ones people either love or never buy again. A variety bundle is the cheap way to find out which you are.

Using it well

Park it between the gum and the upper lip, slightly to one side, and leave it. The tingle in the first minute is normal and fades. Thirty to forty-five minutes is a full session; after that there is little left in it. Do not chew it, and do not swallow it. Pouches are final sale for hygiene reasons, so if you are unsure, start with one can rather than five.

Questions people ask

Is 6mg a lot for a beginner?

For someone who has never used nicotine, yes. Start at 2mg or 3mg and move up after a few days if it feels like nothing.

How long should a pouch stay in?

Thirty to forty-five minutes is a full session. The tingle in the first minute fades; the nicotine keeps coming for about half an hour.

Can I return pouches I do not like?

No. Nicotine pouches are final sale for hygiene reasons, which is why we suggest one can or a variety bundle before a five pack of one flavor.
