The short version

  • Brush the empty oven while it is still warm after every few sessions; do the full alcohol clean about once a week.
  • Alcohol is for the parts you take off: screens, mouthpiece, cooling unit. The oven only ever gets a barely damp swab.
  • A screen that has been scrubbed three times gets replaced; a cooling unit that stays filmy after a soak gets replaced too.
  • Empty while warm, do not overfill, and use the Mighty+ dosing capsule: the cleaning drops by half.

A dry herb vaporizer does not break so much as it silts up. Resin coats the oven, the screen plugs, the vapor path narrows, and one day the draw feels like pulling through a straw and the flavor has gone flat. None of that is a fault; it is maintenance you skipped. Here is a cleaning routine that takes ten minutes, what to use, how often to do it, and which parts you replace rather than scrub.

What you need

Most of the kit comes with the vaporizer. The rest is in a drugstore aisle.

  • Isopropyl alcohol, the higher the percentage the better; it dissolves resin and evaporates without leaving anything behind.
  • Cotton swabs and a few pipe cleaners for the vapor path.
  • The wire brush and the pick or multi-tool that shipped with the device. The PAX Four comes with a maintenance multi-tool, three oven screens and a wire brush; the Mighty+ and the Venty each come with a cleaning brush and spare screens.
  • A small dish for soaking screens and metal parts, and paper towels.
  • Spare screens, because a screen that has been scrubbed three times is usually ready to be swapped.
Heads up

Alcohol is for the parts you take off the device: screens, mouthpieces, the cooling unit. It never goes into the oven or near the battery and electronics. A swab barely damp with alcohol is as wet as the oven ever gets.

How often

After every few sessions, brush the empty oven while it is still warm and tap the loose material out. Resin that has not cooled hard yet comes away in seconds; the same resin a week later needs alcohol and patience. Once a week or so, with regular use, do the full routine below. If the draw is tight, the flavor is off, or the device struggles to hold temperature, do it now regardless of the calendar.

Cleaning the oven and screen

  1. Make sure the device is off and empty, and give it a few minutes to cool. PAX suggests waiting about ten minutes after a session before maintenance; warm to the touch is the target, not hot. Tip the used material out and brush the oven walls with the wire brush.
  2. Lift the oven screen out with the pick or multi-tool. On a PAX it sits on the oven floor; on a Mighty+ or Venty the screens are in the filling chamber.
  3. Drop the screen in the dish with enough alcohol to cover it and leave it while you do the rest. Ten minutes is plenty for routine cleaning.
  4. Wipe the oven walls with a swab barely damp with alcohol, then with a dry swab. Keep going with fresh swabs until a dry one comes out clean. Do not pour or drip alcohol into the oven.
  5. Take the screen out of the dish, scrub it with the wire brush, rinse it under hot water, and dry it completely before it goes back. A bent, torn or permanently blocked screen gets replaced.

The Mighty+ has a ceramic-coated filling chamber, which is one reason its oven wipes clean more easily than a bare metal one. It still needs the wipe.

Tip

Run one short empty heating cycle after a cleaning, with the oven empty and the mouthpiece off, and let the device cool again before you use it. It burns off any alcohol trace and the first draw tastes like nothing, which is the goal.

Cleaning the mouthpiece and vapor path

The mouthpiece is where most of the taste problems live, because vapor cools and condenses there. Pull it off, soak it in alcohol with the screen, and clear the channel with a pipe cleaner. Silicone and plastic mouthpieces should be rinsed well in hot water afterward and dried, since alcohol left on them tastes exactly like you would expect.

The PAX Four ships with both flat and raised mouthpieces, so you can run one while the other dries. The vapor path from the oven to the mouthpiece is the part people forget: push a pipe cleaner lightly damp with alcohol through it, then a dry one, and repeat until the dry one comes out clean.

The cooling unit on a Mighty+ or Venty

Storz & Bickel portables route vapor through a cooling unit that sits on top of the device, and the cooling unit is where their resin collects. Unclip it, pull the mouthpiece and the small screens out of it, and take the two halves apart. Soak the plastic parts in alcohol, scrub the channels with the brush, rinse with hot water and dry fully before reassembly. Check the seal rings while it is apart; a dry, cracked ring lets air in and the draw gets weak.

Cooling units wear out. The plastic yellows, the clips loosen, and the channels keep a film no soak will shift. When that happens the fix is a fresh unit, not more cleaning. The Venty Wear and Tear Set has a cooling unit, mouthpieces, screens, filling chamber tools and a cleaning brush in one box.

Screens, brushes and kits worth keeping

Keep a set of spare screens near the device so a tired one gets swapped instead of nursed. The PAX Maintenance Kit covers the PAX 2, 3, Mini, Four and Plus with three 3D oven screens and a wire brush. The 3D screens are raised rather than flat, which PAX says resists clogging. If you run a PAX Flow, its oven screens come three to a pack.

The Mighty+ and Venty ship with both normal and coarse screens. Coarse screens let more air through and clog more slowly with a coarse grind; normal screens hold finer material in the chamber. If you grind fine and the draw keeps tightening, that is a screen choice as much as a cleaning problem.

Habits that mean less cleaning

A few things cut the cleaning down by half. Empty the oven while it is still warm instead of leaving spent material in it overnight. Do not pack the oven past its line; the PAX Four holds about 0.3 grams, and overfilling pushes material into the screen and the vapor path. Use the dosing capsule the Mighty+ ships with, and most of the resin stays in the capsule rather than the chamber. Give the device a brush at the end of every session and the weekly soak stays a ten-minute job.

If you are still deciding which vaporizer to clean, our guide to portable vs desktop vaporizers covers that choice, and the full range is in our dry herb vaporizers collection, with screens, kits and parts listed beside each device.

Questions people ask

Can I use water instead of alcohol to clean a vaporizer?

Hot water rinses loose material and is the right finish after an alcohol soak, but it does not dissolve resin. Isopropyl alcohol does, and it evaporates without leaving a residue.

How do I know the screen needs replacing rather than cleaning?

If it is bent, torn, or still blocked after a soak and a scrub, replace it. Most people get a few cleanings out of a screen before it is easier to swap in a spare.

Does the PAX Maintenance Kit fit my PAX?

It is listed for the PAX 2, PAX 3, PAX Mini (both generations), PAX Four and PAX Plus, with three 3D oven screens and a wire brush. The PAX Flow uses its own oven screens, sold three to a pack.

What is in the Venty Wear and Tear Set?

A cooling unit, mouthpieces, screens, filling chamber tools and a cleaning brush. It is the set to buy when the cooling unit has yellowed or stopped coming clean.

Why does my vaporizer taste bad after cleaning?

Usually alcohol left on a plastic or silicone part, or a part that went back wet. Rinse those parts in hot water, dry everything fully, and run one empty heating cycle before the next session.
